Why This Matters

Plastic waste has become a pressing issue in our city, with large quantities of plastic polluting streets, rivers, and oceans, harming both the environment and public health. Despite bans on single-use plastics, improper disposal remains widespread, contributing to clogged drains and environmental degradation. To combat this, it’s crucial to teach school children the importance of waste segregation. By instilling these habits early on, we can ensure that future generations are equipped with the knowledge and responsibility to manage plastic waste effectively. This simple yet impactful change can help reduce pollution and promote a sustainable, eco-conscious society.
The intervention focused on raising awareness about plastic waste management and segregation across 27 schools in Mumbai, including both municipal and private institutions. Activities included awareness sessions for students, parent meetings to gain support, and the collection of plastic waste. The initiative distributed recycled products like pens to students and benches to schools. The BCPT grant funded logistics, educational sessions, plastic collection, and the procurement of recycled products, ensuring widespread outreach and sustained engagement. In total, 8,697 students benefitted from the project, empowering them to understand and practice plastic waste segregation for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Our Intervention

The Difference We’ve Made

The intervention has achieved significant positive outcomes, including the completion of 53 sessions, the collection of 608 kg of plastic waste, and the distribution of 8,697 recycled pens and 5 recycled benches. Students have shown noticeable behavioral changes, adopting responsible waste management practices. The project is expected to have a lasting impact by fostering lifelong habits of plastic segregation and environmental responsibility in children, extending to their families and communities. An unexpected yet positive outcome has been the increased involvement of families in plastic collection, further amplifying the project’s community impact and promoting broader environmental awareness.
